The Hunger Games were filmed here. In Somiedo. In Asturias. In our surroundings.
During the summer of 2026, Somiedo Natural Park became a film set. The new instalment of the saga, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, scheduled for international release in November 2026, used the natural landscapes of northern Spain to bring the world of Panem to life.
The choice was no coincidence. Somiedo offers what few corners of Europe can guarantee: untouched nature, mountain-scale scenery, ancient forests and genuine isolation that cameras capture with an authenticity that cannot be faked. The Natural Park, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, had everything the production needed.
Director Francis Lawrence and his team found in these Asturian valleys the perfect settings for the 50th edition of the Hunger Games — the Second Quarter Quell — which forms the narrative backbone of this new chapter in the saga.
If you've been wondering where The Hunger Games was filmed in Spain in 2026, the answer is here: in Somiedo, in Asturias, across these same landscapes you can walk through today.
Villa Caunedo: the retreat chosen by the Hollywood crew
During July and August 2026, director Francis Lawrence and his closest collaborators chose the small village of Caunedo as their place of rest at the end of each filming day. Villa Caunedo was their base of operations — their home away from the set.
The choice reflects exactly what Villa Caunedo offers: complete privacy, genuine space, an unrivalled natural setting and the warmth of a house with history. It is not a hotel. There is no reception desk, no corridors. It is a collection of private spaces at the heart of a natural park, designed for sharing quality time with the people who matter.
The same team that built the visual world of Panem in these mountains found in Villa Caunedo the ideal place to unwind at the end of the day — the fireplace in El Refugio del Oso, the long communal table in La Cuadra, the private wine cellar, the open-air barbecue with views of the mountain.

The four real filming locations in Somiedo
These are the places within and around Somiedo Natural Park that appear in Sunrise on the Reaping. All of them are a short distance from Villa Caunedo. All are accessible. And all of them can be explored during your stay.
Montegrande Beech Forest — The Arena
The ancient beech forest in the municipality of Teverga became the Arena where the Games take place. Natural mist, century-old trees and uneven terrain created the perfect atmosphere to represent the tension and survival of the tributes.

Valle del Lago — The Cornucopia
The open meadows and mountains surrounding Valle del Lago served as the setting for the Cornucopia — the starting point of the competition. Today you can walk these same trails and discover one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the park.

Saliencia Lakes — Untamed Nature
The glacial complex of the Saliencia Lakes brought a powerful and remote aesthetic to the film's visual world. Its high-mountain lakes, surrounded by peaks and natural pastures, convey that sense of isolation and raw force that defines the world of Panem.

Monte Carcedo Pine Forest — Complementary Landscape
Located within the Babia y Luna Natural Park, the Monte Carcedo Pine Forest expanded the visual richness of the landscapes used in the production. This pine forest added new textures and natural scale to the world recreated in northern Spain.

The world of The Hunger Games
For those new to the saga, or looking to refresh the context ahead of the release, here is what you need to know.
Panem.
Panem is a post-apocalyptic nation governed by the Capitol and divided into specialised districts — mining, agriculture, energy, technology — that labour to sustain the luxury of central power. Its name derives from the Latin expression Panem et Circenses: bread and circuses, control through entertainment. Structural inequality is the foundation of the system.
The Games and the Reaping.
The Hunger Games were created as punishment following a failed rebellion by the districts against the Capitol. Each year the Reaping takes place: a public event in which two young people from each district are selected by lottery — the tributes — who must compete until only one survives. The Arena where the Games take place is designed and controlled by the Gamemakers, who manipulate the climate and environment to heighten the spectacle's tension.
The Cornucopia.
At the centre of the Arena stands the Cornucopia: the point where weapons and supplies are concentrated at the start of the game. A symbol of false abundance — everyone can access the resources, but doing so carries extreme risk — it is one of the most charged and politically significant moments of the entire saga.
The Mockingjay.
Beyond survival, the Games function as a tool of propaganda and political control. The Mockingjay, a symbol born of resistance, represents the possibility of rebellion against the Capitol's dominance. It is the emblem that runs through the entire saga.
