A few days ago, we decided to try something different as a family: spending six nights at Villa Caunedo, a cozy accommodation in the heart of the Somiedo Natural Park in Asturias. We wanted to disconnect from our routine and enjoy nature, culture, and quality time together. Here’s a summary of our experience:

Day 1: Arrival at Villa Caunedo

We arrived in the afternoon, excited to discover our new home for the next few days. Villa Caunedo won us over from the start: a perfect mix of rustic charm and modern comforts. While the kids ran around the garden and explored the outdoor areas, we prepared a quick dinner in the renovated stable. We ended the day relaxing on the terrace, surrounded by silence and the peace of the landscape.

Day 2: Pure Nature

Our second day was all about nature. In the morning, we hiked the trail to Braña de Mumian, an easy route perfect for the little ones. Seeing the traditional thatched-roof huts felt like stepping back in time, and we enjoyed a picnic outdoors surrounded by mountains and fresh air. In the afternoon, we visited the Somiedo Interpretation Center, where the kids were amazed learning about brown bears and local wildlife. We ended the day baking pizzas in the wood-fired oven at Villa Caunedo—kneading the dough, choosing toppings, and enjoying our own creations together.

Day 3: A Cultural Journey

We decided it was time for a bit of history. In the morning, we visited the Somiedo Ethnographic Museum in Veigas. The kids loved seeing how shepherds lived in the past. In the afternoon, we returned to Villa Caunedo to relax. While the kids played in the garden, we got cozy by the fireplace in El Refugio del Oso. That evening, we organized a family movie night using the projector screen.

Day 4: Sand, Sea, and Culture

On the fourth day, we headed to the coast. Aguilar Beach welcomed us with its natural charm—the kids built sandcastles and played along the shore. For lunch, we treated ourselves at Casa Consuelo in Luarca, where we enjoyed amazing fresh fish. On the way back, we stopped in Avilés to visit the Niemeyer Center. The kids were fascinated by the modern architecture, and we loved strolling through the old town. A perfect day.

Day 5: Wildlife Watching and Local Traditions

This was a special day. We joined a guided tour to spot brown bears and birds of prey. The kids were thrilled every time we spotted an animal, and we learned so much about the area’s biodiversity. For lunch, we ate at La Corte in Villar de Vildas, where the homemade croquettes were a hit with the kids. In the afternoon, we explored nearby villages with traditional hórreos (granaries), and once back at Villa Caunedo, we lit the outdoor barbecue. We feasted on top-quality Asturian meats and chorizo, washed down with local cider. Dinner under the stars was the perfect ending to an unforgettable day.

Day 6: Farewell at the Saliencia Lakes

On our last day, we headed to the Saliencia Lakes. The views were breathtaking, and the kids had a blast collecting stones and exploring the trails. To end our trip on a high note, we had lunch at Hotel-Restaurant Picos Blancos, a well-known mountain retreat in the heart of La Cueta de Babia. The food was delicious—an ideal closing to our adventure. In the afternoon, we returned to Villa Caunedo to pack and unwind before heading home.

An Experience to Remember

Our stay at Villa Caunedo was much more than just a vacation. Each day brought its own magic, blending fun, learning, and meaningful family moments. If you're looking to disconnect and reconnect with nature, this corner of Asturias is the perfect place. We’ll definitely be back!
