Somiedo: Pure, Untouched Nature
Located in the south of Asturias, in the heart of the Cantabrian Mountains, Somiedo is one of the most extraordinary natural sanctuaries in Northern Spain. Spanning nearly 30,000 hectares, its terrain rises from 400 meters to peaks above 2,100 meters, creating an impressive landscape shaped by forests, valleys and glacial lakes.

In 1988, Somiedo became the first Natural Park declared in Asturias, and since 2000, it has also been recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, highlighting the outstanding conservation of its biodiversity and mountain ecosystems.

🟢 Habitat of the Cantabrian brown bear
Somiedo remains one of Europe’s last wild refuges, home to emblematic species such as the Cantabrian brown bear, the Iberian wolf, the capercaillie and the golden eagle. Its rugged valleys, beech and oak forests, and ancient pastoral traditions shape an environment where nature continues to thrive.
🏅 An Exemplary Land
Somiedo’s cultural heritage is as remarkable as its landscapes. Two of its villages have been awarded the Exemplary Town of Asturias Prize by the Princess of Asturias Foundation:
-
Viḷḷar de Vildas (2004)
-
Santa María del Puertu (2021)
This rare double recognition highlights the authenticity, identity, and community spirit of Somiedo, a territory where people and nature coexist in harmony, preserving traditions that have survived for generations.
